September 23, 2015 -
Novi Sad is the largest city of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, the northern province of the Republic of Serbia, as well as the seat of provincial authorities and the administrative center of the South Backa District.
Today, Novi Sad is the second largest city in the Republic of Serbia with a population of 340,000 inhabitants. 23% of the total population is under 35 years old (age 14-30 pop. 78,200). Novi Sad is a city of young people: administrative, economic, cultural, scientific and tourist center of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. Also, Novi Sad has one state and two private universities, which counted a total of about 50,000 students from all parts of the region. Novi Sad and has 30 secondary schools, and more than 100-organizations of the civil sector, which gathered a large number of youth.
“Novi Sad – Youth Capital of Europe 2018” (“OPENS2018”) aims to support young people to become proactive initiators of positive changes and innovative ideas in society both in the city of Novi Sad and at national and international level. The project of the City of Novi Sad for the European Capital of Youth is an invitation to young people to become actively involved in their own development and construction of its own independence. That is why our motto is “Live Life”.
“OPENS2018” fully promote the values that are listed as priorities in the “National Strategy for Youth”, the “Law on Youth of the Republic of Serbia”, “Action Plan for youth policies AP Vojvodina” and “Local Action Plan for the City of Novi Sad” with special emphasis on the following five priorities: youth awareness, safety youth, inter-culturalism, social entrepreneurship and creative industries, youth volunteerism.
The city has engaged in this process in order to increase the quality of young people’s lives, starting from basic conditions, such as safety and information then building capacities of youth and finally resulting in greater autonomy. We believe that this is important because autonomous young people can make a contribution to society, by increasing positive changes in it.
We have decided to build the initiative to start from setting the grounds (safety, information) then build the capacities (participation, entrepreneurship) which will result in greater autonomy of young people in terms of economical independence, social involvement in political and other aspects such as voluntarism and intercultural dialogue.
University of Novi Sad, The Youth Theatre, Student Cultural Center, NOMUS, Rhythm of Europe, Cinemania, Youth Fair – fair youth tourism, O RADIO (youth radio), EXIT … are just pieces of the puzzle which, by all criteria, provide us the right to be the capital of Youth Europe.
Creative young people, youth organizations, organizations for youth, student organizations, foundations, associations and NGOs, on the one hand and the competent institutions and authorities of the City of Novi Sad, Vojvodina and Republic of Serbia, on the other hand, form a team which successfully implement the project OPENS2018.
The “OPENS 2018” aims to further promote the candidacy and the development and implementation of various activities at the local, national and international level that will improve conditions for better position of youth in Novi Sad and contribute to further development of youth policy and youth work.
