Cascais – a cool and dynamic young place!
November 2, 2015 -
Cascais is a municipality in the suburbs of Lisbon capital city. It is Portugal’s 6th most populous municipality with 206 455 inhabitants, of which around 40% is under 35 years old, being the municipality that grew the most in the past 10 years.
A land of fishermen and kings, of artists and spies, of tradition and sophistication, where the blue sea contrasts with the lush green mountains, few places in the world congregate so many asymmetries, with such charm and perfection, as the town of Cascais.
Being a famous vacation spot for the Portuguese and foreigners who seek to enjoy its beaches, good food, warm weather and hospitable people, Cascais also offers an interesting and dynamic environment for young people: it is close to business centres, mobility is easy, infrastructures are accessible, it is close to the capital but with its own life. The 2 existing Universities attract youth from other parts of the country, and a new campus is now being planned. Besides all the natural wealth, heritage and artistic and cultural events, Cascais has throughout its region a large set of infrastructures, public spaces, parks and squares that already host a variety of activities for youth all around the year.
In Cascais young people can find: a Municipal Council for Youth Policy, a specific Youth department in the Town Hall, as well as departments working towards employability and social inclusion; 38 active youth associations; a network of 4 youth information centers; hundreds of sports organizations and infrastructures; a youth dedicated web portal www.cascaisjovem.com; a radio and television network inside high schools; DNA Cascais – giving support in the field of entrepreneurship and Espaço S – supporting youth in health and sexuality.
Why Cascais for European Youth Capital 2018?
We are highly motivated to bring the title of European Youth Capital 2018 to Cascais! Not only will it give international visibility and recognition to the work carried out, but more importantly it will also create the opportunity and inspiration to further develop policies and initiatives aimed at youth, reinforcing the relations between the local and the European institutions.
Our Vision is to combine global and local dimensions, towards the process of social transformation. Therefore our theme: “Glocal Youth”.
… we view EYC as an opportunity to share and exchange existing good practices between the local and international level, thus contributing to a more cohese Europe, inclusive of its local/regional diversities.
… we want to create new opportunities for empowerment towards the practice of a global Citizenship, active at local level but aware and incorporating the complexity of the global dimension.
… we believe that this generation can only be fully engaged in the access to rights – and youth rights in particular – if it is aware of the importance of an intergenerational dialogue with a long-term vision of the world.
Fostering youth cooperation from the local to the international level, connecting relevant stakeholders with each other and promoting a reinforced sense of European Citizenship.
Developing a meaningful youth participation, social inclusion and cultural diversity. Empowering the role of young people in the community and including them in a dialogue on a long-term vision on youth related policies.
Promoting non formal and informal education, as well as social and professional development of youth. Raising the attractiveness of Cascais territory, by boosting a youth friendly and dynamic environment which contributes to the fixation of young people in the territory and consequent positive urban development.
An interesting, vibrant, diverse and meaningful program is being built with, by and for young people, to make Cascais EYC2018 an amazing, unforgettable experience to all! We want Cascais EYC2018 to be the engine of a glocal movement, with youth at the centre. A glocal youth for a better world!
