PRESS RELEASE – From Thessaloniki to Azores
July 23, 2014 - Thessaloniki
On Wednesday 23 July 2014, at 9.30, from the beach of Thessaloniki, in front of the hotel Macedonia Pallas, the mission «Hellas – Azores», will sail off. It is a great operation that will be realized for the first time.
Four navigators (Thomas Panagiotopoulos, Spyros Goniotakis, Christiano Senini, Alexandros Veis), will depart on an inflatable boat ten meters long to travel along 3.000 nautical miles from Greece to Azores. For the celebration of the departure it is organized a farewell event with the presence of representatives of the local Authorities and the Mass Media, the Suzuki marine of Greece and also people who love the sea. Many inflatable boats will be at the marine to sail along with the boat of the mission a small distance in the Thermaic Gulf.
This operation with the aim to transfer globally the message that «The Mediterranean Sea unites us» takes place under the aegis of The Thessaloniki-European Youth Capital 2014.
The final destination is Ponta Delgada, the largest port and the capital of Azores. The intermediate stops are Napoli, Marseille, Barcelona and Lisbon.
It is estimated that the journey will be completed until 20-25 August, depending on the weather conditions. The last part of the journey is the most difficult, as it is the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean from Portugal to Azores. In order to sail this area (more than 800 nautical miles), the navigators estimate that it will take them two days and two nights, without the possibility of refueling. This extraordinary factor of difficulty makes the journey Greece-Azores one of the top sea events of the year 2014 in the whole Europe.
