An EYC handover: from Cluj (2015) to Ganja (2016)
January 6, 2016 - Ganja
The European Youth Capital title has been officially passed from the 2015 holder (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) to Ganja, Azerbaijan. The 2015 and 2016 European Youth Capitals initiated what they hope will be a new tradition, in passing a symbolic key between the two municipalities at the year’s end.
The passing ceremony took place on December 15th in Cluj-Napoca. During the event the Mayor of Cluj Mr. Emil Boc and the EYC2015 team passed the symbolic key to the representatives from Ganja, European Youth Capital 2016. Vice-Mayor Mikayil Zeynalov, Head of the Department of Youth & Sport Mushfig Jafarov, and Chairman of the Ganja EYC Public Union Elmir Valiyev received the key on behalf of Ganja city.
Back in Ganja, the key was greeted by volunteers, young people and citizens at the exit of Ganja International Airport and was presented to the people of the city during a city-tour on an open-top bus. With the tour, Cluj-Napoca officially closed its period as European Youth Capital and Ganja got its first symbolic start of the EYC2016 year.
Ganja is looking forward to passing the key on to the 2017 European Youth Capital (Varna, Bulgaria) after a successful EYC year in 2016. They city then hopes that the tradition is kept and strengthened as the key is passed through the Network of European Youth Capitals, traveling to many youth-friendly cities across Europe.
